The last few days, for the first time, the Cherubim has been putting on his socks and shoes on his own in the morning. (He’s quite capable of this, but normally his socks are a bit tight and hard to get on.)
This morning before school, he actually sat down to eat breakfast when asked. I sat down beside him and handed him his socks, resulting in the following conversation.
Mommy: "Can you put on your socks?"
Cherubim: "No."
Mommy: "Please?"
Cherubim: "No." ( You have to picture these said with strong emphasis but no anger or volume. I do not believe that the Cherubim knows how to raise his voice. He says everything in the same calm volume. He can scream, but he’s never yelled..)
Mommy: "Do you want togo outside?"
Cherubim: "No."
Mommy: "Do you want a kiss?"
Cherubim: "No."
Mommy, trying to make him laugh, because he’s looking solemn and stuborn: "Do you want a nose?"
Cherubim: "No."
Mommy: "Do you want eyebrows?"
Cherubim: "No."
Mommy: "Do you want a rainbow?"
Cherubim, his face softening with interest and wonder: "Rainbow?"
Well…now I was stuck. How did I give him a rainbow? Then, I remembered that yesterday, I had found a pack of markers. So, I drew him a six-colored rainbow. I think I reversed the order, putting red on the bottom instead of purple, but I got them in the correct order. I passed it to the Cherubim, and he seemed delighted.
But this is a new thing. Never before has he snapped out of his "No." mood because I offered him something fanciful. On the other hand, I’d better be careful what I offer!
So, in the Cherubim’s honor, some lines from Sunshine Superman:
Superman or Green Lantern ain’t got a-nothin’ on me
I can make like a turtle and dive for your pearls in the sea, yeah!
A you-you-you can just sit there a-thinking on your velvet throne
’bout all the rainbows a-you can a-have for your own
Wow!
It was a good day for Ben, too–see entry.
Must be a specially blessed day for our young ones.
Rainbows and chocolate milk. It is to weep.
I am amused that we independantly cross-referenced each other!
Hee. That’s awesome! But yes, be careful.

…..So THAT’S what that line says!
All this time I thought it said “dive for impermanence.”
But then, I thought the line about rainbows offered to tie them into a bow. ;-)
I thought it was “I’ll bow down the rainbow so you can have for your own.”
There are no Google results for the full phrase “bow down the rainbow.” Now I feel I should use it somewhere.
Definitely!
