Crying With The Radio — Tell The Story Of Grace

Okay…I am no stranger to crying with the radio. There are a number of sad songs that make me cry either every time or occasionally.

There is the one about the father praying for his desperately ill son: He’s My Son by Mark Schultz

And the one about the couple who fell in love on their first date and he’s still “walking her home” when she is dying as an old lady: He Was Walking Her Home  also by Mark Schultz. (Huh. I didn’t realize that.)

And Letters From War–also by Mark Schultz . That one gets me nearly every time.

And the one about the couple who is told by the OB-G that their daughter won’t live past a year. What It Means To Be Loved also by Mark Schultz (I am detecting a pattern here.) This one made me cry so hard that tears ran all the way down to my neck and met under my chin. That had never happened before. (Couldn’t wipe them away, traffic was bad.)

Boy! I had no idea those songs were all by the same guy!!! But this post is not about those songs, it is about an entirely different song, an almost silly song, that makes me cry every single time.

It is Do Everything by Steven Curtis Chapman. The lyrics are amusing, almost goofy, but every time it gets to the chorus, and I hear:  “bring a smile to His face
And tell the story of grace” I start crying. Efen just reading them now made me cry.

I cannot explain it except to say that it is as if someone else wrote down the secret meditation of my heart, the thing I pray quietly every day.

Here are the lyrics:

You’re picking up toys on the living room floor
for the 15th time today
Matching up socks and sweeping up lost
Cheerios that got away
You put a baby on your hip and color on your lips
and head out the door
And while I may not know you I bet I know you
Wonder sometimes does it matter at all
We’ll let me remind you it all matters just as long as you

Do everything you do to the glory of the One who made you
Cause He made you to do
Every little thing that you do to bring a smile to His face
And tell the story of grace
With every move that you make
And every little thing you do

OOoh ooooh oooooh

Maybe you’re that guy with the suit and tie
Maybe your shirt says your name
You may be hooking up mergers, cooking up burgers
But at the end of the day

Little stuff big stuff in between stuff
God sees it all the same
And while I may not know you I bet I know you
Wonder sometimes does it matter at all
We’ll let me remind you it all matters just as long as you do

Everything you do to the glory of the One who made you
Cause He made you
To do every little thing that you do to bring a smile to His face
And tell the story of grace with every move that you make
And every little thing that you do

Well maybe you’re sitting in math class
Maybe on a mission in the Congo
Maybe you’re working at the office
Singing along with the radio
Maybe you’re dining at a five star
Or feeding orphans in Myanmar
Anywhere and everywhere you are
Whatever you do it all matters
So do what you do and don’t ever forget
to do

Everything you do to the glory of the One who made you
Cause He made you to do
Every little thing that you do to bring a smile to His face
And tell the story of grace as you do
Everything you do to the glory of the One who made you
Cause He made you to do
Every little thing that you do to bring a smile to His face
And tell the story of grace with every move that you make
And every little thing that you do

Ooh oooooh
Every little thing you do
